One Of The Most Romantic Destinations In India – Udaipur!

Share

Firstly I need to confess that I am not a romantic! I got a chance to spend two days in this beautiful city and it made me rethink that maybe I am one! No seriously, imagine if a place can make you feel something you believe that you are not! All I wish now is that I had poetic skills to come up with phrases or statements that describe it’s beauty and how I feel in love with everything again. Udaipur you beauty!

Quick pointers:

Travel: Chennai to Udaipur by flight. Uber and Autos in Udaipur. Uber proved to be super cheap to take from Aiport to city and back. I guess the time we went they were running an offer that we did not know about – a flat fee of Rs. 300 one way.
Hotel: Greco House
Food: Vegan, veg and non-veg food varieties available in plenty. Loved Sukhadia Circle.
Cost: Rs. 30000 / $450 approx (flights, food, stay, local transport, entry fees, shopping, etc. ) for two.
Interesting Tip: Can find lots of tailors to stitch suits, dresses, etc. You can thank me later 🙂

Udaipur – The City of Palaces

City of Palace

We chose a place to stay in the old town of Udaipur in a haveli. Havelis are those typical houses that you will find in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc. It is known for the architectures and represents history in many ways. In my opinion, the best place to stay in Udaipur is in the old town in a haveli.

If not for the way the two wheelers ride within the old town, I would have enjoyed the old town much more than I did. You need to walk along those streets to know what I am talking about.

Udaipur is a gorgeous and well maintained (as far as I can see) city. It made me wonder how it would have been during the 1600-1900’s. You will find many travellers from across the world who stay in this quaint town for many weeks and explore history and culture. Maharana Pratap is the most celebrated Mewar King and there are so many royal palaces within the city.

The City Palace in Udaipur

The most famous palace of all or rather the most visited palace is the City Palace. Unless you book a room at the Taj Lake Palace, you will not be able to enter this palace where the Bond film Octopussy was shot. The Monsoon Palace is badly maintained but offers great views. We were unable to go to the Pleasure Palace due to lack of time. The Pleasure Palace or the Jag Mandir Palace is where many celebrities from all over the world like Shakira, JLo, etc. have performed.

One of the most romantic destinations in India

Blessed with many lakes in and around the city, the most famous ones are the Lake Pichola and the Fatehsagar Lake. At nights, the reflection of golden lights will transport you to another world – a magical one. If fairy tales were true, this is where it would have been 🙂 We got to visit two palaces when we stayed during this trip – the City Palace and the Monsoon Palace.

Dinner at Ambrai

Mother Nature has blessed this city to be romantic no matter what. Dine by the river in Ambrai Restaurant (picture above) to stare at the Palaces, sit by the Gangaur Ghat and enjoy your bread with some music – perhaps even feed the pigeons around, walk around the streets, witness the sunset in the Monsoon Palace – do whatever and this city will make you fall in love. You can spend time watching the city’s artists perform various dances and other shows (puppets, etc.) in the City Palace, Bagore Ki Haveli, etc.

Gangaur Ghat near Bagore

This place does not check any of the regular scenery that connects to romance. There is no snow (Bollywood influence), there are a lot of people in this city, you will find no cute houses, yet this made our experience so special.

Things to know before heading to Udaipur

  • You have Uber and Ola other than the Autos. Car’s can’t take you around in the Old City area.
  • You will find food everywhere. Don’t miss going to the Sukhadia Circle – you will love the varieties of food that you get there. Try the Aloo Parathas from Sai Baba, can be found right outside the Vintage and Classic Car Collection. Some places offer yummy poha too. In Fatehsagar, drink that chocolate coffee with hot Maggi – LOVE.
  • There is a Zoo to entertain the kids near the Monsoon Palace.
  • You can rent boats in both Pichola and Fateh Sagar lakes.
