Staying at the InterContinental Bangkok – Hotel Review

Share

The more we explore South East Asia, the more surprises this side of the globe throws at us. This was my first trip to Thailand (Preethika had visited Bangkok before), and say you know by now, we had an awesome time rock climbing, kayaking and snorkelling in Krabi before checking out the quaint town of Chiang Mai. Our next stop was Bangkok.

The beautiful city of Bangkok

Bangkok is extremely vibrant, colourful and busy (crazy traffic, but the city metro a.k.a BTS is heaven sent – thank God for small mercies!) and to top it all, this city never seems to sleep. If you haven’t been there, you must plan a trip, and soon. Thailand has amazing beaches all around, amazing street food (not, if you are a vegetarian/vegan), martial arts, and many temples.

In some sense, I think Bangkok is way better than Dubai (we went there last December), costs much lesser and as much fun. What’s more, one of the highlights of our trip was our stay, in InterContinental Bangkok!

A little about our stay at InterContinental Bangkok

The Hotel

The InterContinental Bangkok is a 5-star hotel located in Sukhumvit, one of Bangkok’s most modern and cosmopolitan neighbourhoods, is located in the central Bangkok. It is within walking distance to a lot of Bangkok’s best shopping malls, restaurants from all over the world, spas and more.

One can escape the infamous Bangkok traffic by taking the BTS Skytrain (metro), the entrance to Chit Lom station is right in front of the hotel.

InterContinental Bangkok comprises 381 luxury rooms including Club InterContinental accommodation apart from a range of
suites. Categories of the rooms are Grande Deluxe, Executive Deluxe, Corner Suite, Club InterContinental, Club Corner Suite, Premier Suite, Executive Suite, Ambassador Suite, Diplomatic Suite and the Royal Suite. The Grande Deluxe is the smallest, at a whopping 484 square feet of space (that’s not small by any means!) while the Royal Suite is bigger than most Indian houses, at 2700 square feet (no, I did not make a mistake with those numbers!).

We stayed at a Grande Deluxe category room which is the starting category, but we never got that impression since it was quite spacious with a flat panelled 46″ LED TV, universal electrical outlets (plenty of them in fact), a King-Sized bed with a choice of pillows (we could choose among 13 different varieties, but we settled for the one that came with the room by default, that was quite comfortable) etc. The workstation was spacious and ergonomic, and given that we were on the 28th floor, we loved the view!

The bathroom was quite spacious, with a shower and a bathtub (we didn’t have time for the latter) and other luxury amenities. Assorted fresh fruits were waiting for us when we checked in and they were quite yummy and were promptly replaced every day we stayed there.

Check-in process was pretty fast for a hotel of this size. Our luggage was already in the room before we got there. Room service was stunning and the room was impeccably clean, something we were bowled over by!

Food & Drink

Espresso in ICC Bangkok

We ate at three out of the four restaurants at InterContinental Bangkok, starting with Espresso on Day 1 where there’s a huge buffet spread for both breakfast as well as lunch, Fireplace Grill and Bar which is famous for its steaks and seafood but the people at the restaurant went out of their way to make sure our vegetarian demands (Preethika and I are worse than hardcore vegetarians – that translates to no fish, no meat, no egg, and if that wasn’t enough, no mushrooms and no eggplant as well!) were met on Day 2 and at Theo Mio on Day 3 which serves the most amazing Italian food we’ve ever eaten till date was the icing on the cake. At a risk of sounding overawed, we must tell you this, the food and drink, as well as the service at InterContinental Bangkok, is simply mind blowing, so much so that it deserves a separate post by itself.

Multiple restaurants in ICC Bangkok

Before anyone points out, yes, you will see a restaurant review on Passing Ports, for the first time ever. We don’t usually focus much on food on Passing Ports apart from guiding people, but the InterContinental Bangkok certainly deserves it. That post is coming soon.

Club InterContinental

If their regular service wasn’t impeccable enough, the folks at InterContinental take customer service to another level with Club InterContinental. Club InterContinental at the InterContinental Bangkok is on the 37th floor where they take care of their “special” customers in a personalised manner.

We got to spend a little time there and were absolutely blown not just by the service rendered (not like we were left wanting by their regular service), but by the views the Club InterContinental offered of Bangkok City as well.

Activities

The InterContinental Bangkok has a beautiful swimming pool on the rooftop with a bar attached that we took full advantage of on the last day. Not only did we laze around in the pool for hours apart from swimming a few laps. Thanks to the Weather God 😉

Apart from that, they have a large, well-equipped gym (Infinity Fitness) and a spa (Spa InterContinental). If you know us well by now, we have no use for the former and sadly, no time for the latter.

Bottomline

The InterContinental Bangkok’s location is brilliant, has extremely friendly and helpful staff, and excellent facilities. If that wasn’t all, the bed and pillows were absolutely God sent, and we didn’t want to leave at all. No, it is still not all. Food at the property was exemplary and at Theo Mio, it was out of the world! This isn’t a joke, there’s not one leaf that was left unturned by the staff to make sure that our stay was most comfortable, in spite of our pickiness on food. Easily the best property we’ve stayed in till date.

Would we go back? Yes, of course!
